Mt. Pleasant Deck the Bikes 2011 - Featuring New Belgium Brews!

It may be cold outside, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't be on your bike! Bundle up, get out your tinsel, and join us for the Mt Pleasant Cruiser Ride. Dress up like Santa's lost elf, a Menorah candle, Jack Frost or don your finest Dashiki.

Join us on the first night of Hanukkah, Decemeber 20, 2011 at 8:30 pm in Lamont Park (at the corner Mt. Pleasant St and Lamont) to celebrate winter on a bike.

We'll ride down to check out the National Christmas tree and then back up to Mt. Pleasant to warm up with a drink at Tonic. <-- Note new location!

In the spirit of the giving season, Tonic is going to give us access to their upstairs bar and $5 Fat Tire draft specials (normally $7!). Best of all, our favorite New Belgium distributor, John Gartner, is buying the first round of Fat Tire Brews for everyone who rides!!

Deck the Bikes with Boughs of Lights,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Tis the season to be jolly,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.

A big shoutout to Greg Billings for helping to make the New Belgium connection happen. Also, Greg reminds all of us that outfitting your bike with some Fat Tires for the winter can help with stability on the ice and snow.

Come out to the Halloween Mt. Pleasant Crusier Ride next Tuesday!

Costume yourself, costume your bike, and get ready for a great fall crusier ride. Bring candy to hand out to folks on the street as we pass by. :)

At the end of the night, we'll have a vote on the best costume who will win a Natty Bo at the Raven (My treat!)

Details:
Meet at 8:30 pm in Lamont Park
Tuesday, October 18, 2011

And remember...

When on the night of Halloween,
“trick or treat” in twos or threes.
wear bright clothing that will not burn,
carry a flashlight and wear a watch.
Stay together, walk, do not run,
cross the street at the corner walk.
Receive the candy at the door,
do not go inside, for more.
Be polite and thank the giver,
never play a vandal’s trick.
Do not eat any candy,
before your parents check for safety.
Finish the night of Trick or Treat
eating the gifts of candy sweets.

Sexy Labor Day Ride

Beautiful Mt. Pleasant Cruiser Riders,

Labor Day may be a few weeks behind us, but this month, let's remember the true spirit of Labor Day. It's not just about the last 3 day weekend at the beach or BBQs. According to greatest enclopedia on the internet, the form of celebration for Labor Day is to be a street parade to exhibit to the public "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations" followed by a festival for the workers and their families.

Therefore, this month each person will be dressing up as their favorite laborer. I'm thinking beautiful nurses, talented teachers, calenderworthy firemen, sexy steelworkers, electric electricians, etc. Although since the professional sports organizations seem to be having so many labor disputes - a football player or basketball player would fit the theme as well.

It's also Cat's birthday (!) so everyone feel free to buy her a drink at the Raven.

Jordan Kupersmith will be leading the ride and providing the tunes for Brendan to play for the enjoyment of all!

Details:
Tuesday, September 20, 2011
Meet at 8:30 pm
Lamont Park at the corner of Mt. Pleasant Street and Lamont St NW

White shoes are welcome.

Latina London Love! August 23, 2011 Ride

The Mt. Pleasant Cruiser Ride torch is being passed once again.

I'd like to take this moment to remember the brisk fall day that Natalia agreed to take over the emailing and theme planning. Since that day she's reminded us each and every month about how beautiful we are:
... from the February presidential special "Obama is my Valentine" to
..."Keep America Beautiful - with buff and beautiful bike legs" in April to
...... June's "Summer Solstice Bikini" ride and
... July's encore bikini ride with "If we can't go to Hawaii, at least we can get leid" themed ride.

This will be Natalia's last Cruiser Ride a while because she's off to graduate school in London. Let's all celebrate Natalia this month by wearing something that reminds you of her. Perhaps this is your first or second ride and you don't know her too well?

This is ok. This ride is all about love.

Here are some ideas:
- Natalia's family is from Colombia and anything Latina will be welcomed (Soccer balls, Colombian flags, latin beats, etc...)
- She grew up in Chicago and went to school in California (Cubs? Windy city? Beach ware? Hollywood sign?)
- London (William and Kate anyone?)
- DC, Natalia is Miss Columbia Height (see event photo of her with Former Mayor Adrian Fenty)
- Bikinis (because she loves to see your beautiful bike bodies)
- Or just wear something that makes you feel beautiful.

Luau Cruiser Ride July 19

What with the stifling temperatures and suffocating humidity, you'd think we are on some exotic island near the equator. Where are the pretty flowers and beautiful people, you ask? My response: Right here in Mt. Pleasant. We don't need palm trees; we have our bikes to make us happy. As our last swimsuit ride was such a wild success, let's do it again! In celebration of this tropical DC climate, we shall ride around in swimsuits, leis, and anything else Hawaiian.

Master ride leader, Tom, will be leading us on a summery adventure and if we're lucky, he may even do a hula dance in front of the White House or the Raven. And after our ride, we can have a luau feast in beer!

Meet at 8:30 PM at the Mt. Pleasant St. NW and Lamont St. park
Tuesday, July 19
Swimsuit/Tropical Attire!

the sunniest day of the year by joining us on the Mt. Pleasant Cruiser

memorials are gorgeous at night :)

Join us at the BikeFest celebration on June 11th, bring your friends, and have a great time while supporting WABA and the continued growth and improvement of cycling in the region.
For more information and for tickets, visit: www.waba.org/bikefest

BikeFest FAQ’s:
What’s happening at this event?

At BikeFest, we are celebrating cycling with art, music, and games. It’s an upscale event for your inner-child, with a bike carnival theme and a light-hearted feel. We will have art bikes and decorations from local artists, a midway with bike-themed carnival-style games, musical accompaniment from DC’s Second String Band, acrobats and jugglers, a silent auction, raffles, and the main event: A Bike Build Contest in which local bike shops (CityBikes, Oasis, & Papillon) will compete to build the most crowd-pleasing bicycle from recycled parts—with the winner chosen by audience votes and bids.

Why does it cost $45?

BikeFest is WABA’s 2011 fundraising event in support of our advocacy, outreach and education. With grant funding currently lagging, regional governmental budgets tightening, and a large Bike to Work Day under our belts, we are committed to raising funds to continue our mission of advocating for increased and improved cycling in the region. As cycling has grown, so have the regional advocacy and education demands on our staff time and budget. It’s undoubtedly a good problem to have, but to meet the increased advocacy needs, serve our members, and reach underserved communities while governmental funding is less prevalent, we need your financial support. Thus, we have put together this fun event that will provide an enjoyable time for all, at a price-that is a bargain for a bike-friendly night-on-the-town with food, drink, and entertainment.

Is this the WABA Gala? Is it the Bike Prom?

No, and no. But it is fun, and we want a big crowd. And it is our annual fundraiser that is critical to our success over the next year. This is replacing this year’s Gala, as we are going back to our roots and sticking more closely to a fun, bike-related themed celebration rather than a formal, black-tie event.

Why is it in Crystal City?

After searching extensively for a space that could be appropriately converted into an upscale bike carnival, the Crystal City BID provided us a space steps from both the Mount Vernon Trail and the Metro with a layout that allowed for game booths, concessions, stage space, seating space, and showcases for the bike build. And they have given us total freedom to decorate with bikes, custom designs, and personal touches.

How do I get there?

That’s the easy part. The space is easily accessible from the Mount Vernon Trail and from the Crystal City Metro. We will have ample bike parking, so feel free to ride in and Metro home with your bike if you choose. Several attendees will be leading meet-ups along the way if you would prefer to ride with a group (details to come on meet-ups). Bottom line: getting there is incredibly easy.

Purchase your tickets today. Space is limited: www.waba.org/bikefest
